This may not sound a particularly sexy topic but this problem is the commonest reason for a patient seeking the help of an eye doctor.

If you suffer from burning, itching eyes in most cases your eye doctor probably will have given you a prescription for artificial tear drops, or ointment and that's it. In most cases that certainly helps but for those who are suffering in silence there are currently 3 new products which are proving very successful.

1) Punctal plugs which block off the tear ducts reducing tear drainage. This means that the tears you do have stay in your eyes for longer.

2) Restasis is a new and revolutionary type of eye drop that increases the natural production of tears from your tear gland.

3) And for those who have been smitten by the omega 3 and 6 food supplement bug, there is increasing evidence that these products in
the right combinations together with other additives can be very effective in restoring the normal tear production balance and relieving symptoms. They are not yet approved officially by the Israeli Health Ministry, but are used in the US by many highly
respected ophthalmologists.

None of these products are currently covered by the Kupot Holim (Israeli national health service), but certainly the first two are being used regularly so make sure your eye doctor considers them if your current treatments are not offering relief.
